8th Graders Making a difference in our Community!!

charity8th grade English Language Arts students are responsible for displaying proficiency in specific areas by the end of their 8th grade academic year.  A few of these standards they are required to master are:  Research Skills, Persuasive Writing and Oral Presentation.  Why not combine the practice of these proficiences with tasks that will benefit our community?

As a class, we hope to practice these literary skills while learning how we can make a difference in our world.  We are researching local, national and world charities to find a perfect fit for each research group.  Each group will develop a plan of action to benefit the charity, research the charity’s history and accomplishments, as well as it’s integrity, and bring the experience and information back to their classmates and community in the forms of oral presentations and research papers.

Teacher of the Year

Teacher-of-the-YearCurrent 2nd grade teacher Candy Drake was recently chosen to be Teacher of the Year. After 22 years of being a member of the staff of Spurger ISD, she feels honored to accept the award.

Mrs. Drake graduated from Lamar University in December, 1990 when she was 40 years old. When she first started teaching in Spurger, she held the position of resource content mastery, and special education teacher.

After having three kids and seven grandchildren, she now has a great-grandchild. Mrs. Drake shared some inspirational advice quoting, “You’ll never stop learning. Even after teaching for 22 years I continue to learn something new everyday.”
